One of the best things about buying a new home in Indianapolis is that our city boasts a spectacular range of architectural styles.
Types of Home Style in Indianapolis
If you are not sure what you want, it may help to have at least a basic overview of those different styles. Let’s learn a little bit about each of the types of homes you may encounter in our metropolitan area.
- Victorian: This is typically an ornate style, featuring multiple floors, roomy, wraparound porches with distinctive columns, bay windows, gables and turrets.
- Ranch: Homes that fall within the “ranch” style tend to be one story with a low roof angle. Their floor plans are open, and large windows let in lots of sunlight. They usually do not feature much in the way of embellishments.
- Tudor: The most recognizable feature that distinguishes the Tudor style is the use of half-timbers. Other common features include leaded glass windows, stone chimneys and other stone elements.
- Bungalow: If you ask someone to picture a traditional house in the suburbs, they may envision a Bungalow with a gabled roof, roomy porch, and open floor plan. Usually these homes feature one and a half or two floors.
- Mid Century Modern: This style enjoyed its heyday in the 40s-70s. Features include clean lines, geometric shapes, mixed materials, large windows and open floor plans. Most iconic is the Mid Century Modern ranch home.
- Cape Cod: This type of home is also called a “saltbox” house. Dormer windows, a roof with a steep angle, clapboard and shutters are all common features of Cape Cod-style houses.
- Colonial Revival: This style makes use of clapboard, pitched roofs, brick and columns, immediately invoking images of Colonial times.
- Contemporary: Finally, many homes that are more recent in Indianapolis feature a “contemporary” style. This is actually a blend of multiple other styles, and may vary dramatically from one specimen to the next. There are no rules with contemporary; builders simply pick what they like and mix it all together.
This is not an exhaustive list; you may sometimes run into Indianapolis homes in other styles as well.
