How to Prevent Burst Water Pipes

Much of the nation has seen temperatures in the single digits and below this winter. If you’re a homeowner, it’s important to take action to protect your water pipes from freezing and bursting. Otherwise, you may end up with water damage and costly plumbing repairs.
According to the American Red Cross, during cold temperatures, the water in your home’s pipes can freeze and expand. Once the pressure buildup between the ice blockage and the closed faucet becomes too great, the metal or plastic pipe can break. Pipes located in unheated attics, basements and crawl spaces, as well as those in exterior walls that have little to no insulation, are particularly vulnerable to freezing temperatures.
